The Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka(http://www.bpu.ac.lk/)

    The Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, established in terms of the Act of Parliament  No.74 of 1981 of the Democratic Socialistic Republic of Sri Lanka was ceremonially opened on the 22nd day of April 1982.The main objectives of this University are the propagation of Buddha Dhamma,the promotion of the Buddhist & Pali studies in Sri Lanka and abroad and the provision of facilities for the conduct of research in the relevant fields. The above Act has been modified by the Buddhist  and Pali University of Sri Lanka Act(Amendment)No.37 of 1995.Simultaneous with the activation of the above mentioned Act of Amendment, the local affiliated institutions which were so far in existence ceased to exist and Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka had been re-structured in conformity  with the structure of the other Universities of Sri Lanka. The structured University with its halls of residence for students was located at Pitipana in Homagama. The basic arrangements required to turn the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka into the level of a fully equipped international university have been already made. It enjoys membership of the Association of Universities of the Commonwealth of Nations. It is also an Associate member of the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Directors (CVCD) of the chain of universities of this country.

    The oldest University in Sri Lanka, the University of Colombo is a sprawling complex located in the heart of the capital city of Colombo.
     In keeping with its motto “Buddhi Sarvathra Bhrajate”, Sanskrit for “Wisdom Enlightens”, the University of Colombo strives to maintain academic excellence in all areas of study. The University of Colombo has 7 Faculties with 41 Academic Departments, a Campus, a School, 6 Institutes and several Centres and Units. Many undergraduate and postgraduate study courses in the fields of Arts, Science, Medicine, Management, Finance, Law, Education, IT, Aesthetic Studies. Molecular Biology etc are conducted by the University. The University also offers several other services, such as library services, career guidance, and services for differently-abled students
     Student life is enhanced by a plethora of extra-curricular activities offered on campus. The beautiful playground and the modern gymnasium offer sportsmen and women the opportunity to exploit and develop their abilities to the fullest. The New Arts Theatre is often the arena for spotlighting the dramatic/musical talents of our student population.
Today, the University of Colombo with a proud history of over 115 years continues in its endeavour to meet the challenge of maintaining its position as the “Metropolitan University, Modern and International in Outlook and Character”. The location of the University affords the student population all the advantages of a “metropolitan university” in easy access to international information/resource centres, libraries, theatres, sports complexes etc.
     Its central location within the City of Colombo provides easy access to a wide range of cultural, entertainment and business facilities.
     The University of Colombo has a multi-cultural multi-ethnic student and staff population, fostering social harmony, cultural diversity, equal opportunity and unity.

  The coat of arms of the University of Kelaniya is circular in design and consists of three concentric bands, the outermost of which contains the name of the University in Sinhala and English. The motto of the institution "Pannaya Parisujjhati" (self-purification is by insight) is a quotation from the Alavaka-sutta of the Samyutta Nikaya, given in Sinhala characters in the same band. The middle band containing a creeper design encloses the innermost, which shows a full blown lotus, signifying purity. These two designs are reminiscent of those occurring in the well-known moonstones at Anuradhapura.

    University of Peradeniya is the heir to the oldest university tradition in Sri Lanka as the successor to the University of Ceylon, the first institution of its kind in the country. Its founding on July 1, 1942 as an autonomous corporation was the fulfillment of hopes and expectations of many who had been campaigning for a university in this country.
    It is located on a site of great natural beauty, just 8km from the city of Kandy - the historic capital of last independent kingdom of Sri Lanka, and 100km from Colombo, the current capital of the country. The university covers about 700 hectares of land located on the flood plain of Mahaweli river as well as on the lower slopes of the Hantana range. The developed area, known as the University Park, is about 150 hectares while the rest of the land remains afforested.
    The university consists of seven academic faculties. About 1800 undergraduates enter the university annually, to make up an undergraduate student population of 6600, and the total number of postgraduate students registered is over 1200. Out of the total undergraduate student population, about 5100 are provided accommodation on and around campus.
The University celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1992.

     Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy (SIBA) is a unique liberal arts higher educational institution set up within a monastic and eco-friendly environment. It is both national and international in scope, grounded on Buddhist principles and, designed to produce local, national, and international religious, social, and political leaders who are simultaneously Dhamma practitioners and disseminators.
    To be a leading centre of Buddhist learning providing guidance to leadership based on the development of wisdom and inculcation of moral values
    Providing and promoting education and training to interested laypersons and members of the monastic community in Sri Lanka and abroad by creating opportunities and facilities to learn, teach and apply the knowledge acquired for realizing for oneself the validity and veracity of the teaching of the Buddha to enable them also to create such understanding in others and thereby serve humanity in general.
